The 16 inch lower bout is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and although the sides are almost as deep, the tight curve at the waist creates a very different sound chamber. SJs, especially examples in maple like this one, typically have a more pronounced midrange response when compared to a dreadnought. Players looking for the bass and overall volume of a large guitar, but with lots of treble clarity and midrange crunch, often find just what they need in the curvaceous SJ. This particular SJ has Sitka spruce top and European maple back and sides. That combination produces a nicely balanced tone that works well for fingerpicking, strumming and vocal accompaniment. This maple SJ also works very well for jazz.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0503/4947/3991/files/1706581_6fa382a4-40f7-4d2e-8b29-2cc98526718c.jpg?v=1788934548
collings-cj-45-traditional-acoustic-guitar-new-20289
Collings CJ-45 Traditional Acoustic Guitar - New
When Collings decided to add a slope-shouldered dreadnought to their Traditional line, they took the CJ and completely redesigned it. The CJ-45 T has braces based on wartime Gibsons with scalloped Sitka X-bracing, 2 scalloped tone bars and a full tongue brace. The neck has a short 24 ⅞” scale length, a 1 ¾” nut width, a rosewood fretboard and a full C neck carve. It has a flat back without the subtle arch that other Collings guitars have. All of this produces a new guitar that packs the sort of growl and presence that we love about vintage instruments. The shorter string scale, compared to Martin D models, also means you don't have to work as hard for that big tone. \r
\r
Like the other guitars in the Traditional Series, Collings used some of the more labor intensive techniques that builders used back in the 1930s and 1940s on this guitar. Another tone enhancing feature is the thinner all-nitrocellulose lacquer gloss finish with no UV-cure filler or undercoats. The small oval neck heel is ideally suited to the optional cutaway, which allows unrestricted access to the upper frets. While Collings is far from the only company to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied instrument. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments, such as banjos and fiddles. The “LC” Vintage models are laminate construction, much like a traditional ES semi-hollow guitar, which are very feedback resistant. These guitars have a slightly smaller body than those traditional ES guitars as well, making them extremely light and comfortable. Each LC model's top and back is laminated in-house at the Collings workshop in Austin, and the grain direction and thickness of the layers is the result of much research by the late Bill Collings. The finish on these is done in multiple thin coats of nitrocellulose lacquer and subtly aged with some light finish checking. The finish in conjunction with the Throbak ESG-102B humbucking pickups, Luxe Bumblebee capacitors, and aged hardware, are what give the I35 LC Vintage its “Vintage” designation. The frets are in good shape and show just a hint a wear. This example has the optional satin finish. The 00 14-Fret finds the sweet spot between a small-bodied and mid-sized instrument while bringing to the table a distinctive voice and character all its own. The shorter 24 7/8″ scale length combined with a relatively broad waist allows for a more delicate top-voicing, producing an openness that’s equally suited for accentuating subtle nuances as it is for digging in on single-note runs.\r
\r
The secret of its great tone isn’t really much of a secret. The trick is that for its Traditional Series, Collings has revived some of the more labor intensive techniques that builders used back in the 1930s and 1940s, the decade we consider the Golden Era of American guitar-making. One of the most important elements is the use of lighter, stiffer wood in the tops and bracing.\r
\r
Other tone enhancing features include a thinner all-nitrocellulose lacquer satin finish with no UV-cure filler or undercoats; no flat brace (sometimes called “tongue brace”) under the end of the fingerboard; and bridges with a through-cut saddle. The neck shapes also have more rounded fingerboard edges and a vintage-inspired profile and taper. While these guitars are not "distressed" or artificially worn to make them appear like an older instrument, both the sound and the feel of these Traditional Series Collings models achieve a more "broken-in" impression for the player, and the listener.
