The original D-45 models were glossy, as befitting the company's most expensive flattop model, and the lacquer finish on these replicas is thin and the figure of wood grain just pops in person. The combination of the VTS-treated top and the forward-shifted top bracing gives this #3-of-91 impressive tone and volume. The Style 45 snowflakes fretboard inlays seen here didn't last long on the original models, and were replaced by the large hexagon blocks of Martin's archtop models in late 1938. The early examples from the D-45 model's first years are extremely rare and they only made six between 1933 and 1937. \r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eMartin has made a number of turn-back-the-clock changes for these models, such as using hot hide glue to assemble them. The purfling is made of hundreds of small, solid abalone pieces just like they did in the 1930s. This really changes the way the abalone bordering glimmers in the light. Another change is that Project 91 guitars have a lot more handwork in the final shaping of the scalloped top bracing and neck profile. Like the original, the guitar has a non-adjustable T-bar truss rod and gold-plated tuning machines with hand engraved buttons. The Ditson models were almost like a separate line of instruments hidden within C. F. Martin. To make it even more confusing, during this same period Ditson purchased regular Martin guitar models, some with both Martin and Ditson stamps!\r\u003cbr\u003e \r\u003cbr\u003eThis guitar, with serial number 473 on the neck block, was one of the first batch of four 1-42 models shipped to the C.H. Ditson store in New York City 7\/26\/1919 (8 more were shipped later that month, but no others followed).  Like the other early Ditsons, it differs from Martin's higher guitar models of the period both in terms of body shape as well as structure; all the early Ditson models had fan-braced tops, not X-bracing. This example is in remarkably good condition with its original shellac-varnish finish.  The neck is straight and string action is very comfortable. All its parts are original and none of the bracing, including the bridge plate,  has been altered or repaired.  The original bridge has been reglued, and the bridge pins are not original. It has its original tuners, nut, pickguard and bridge, even has the original bridge pins and end pin (there are seven bar stock frets in the case, we're assuming those are originals and seven were replaced when neck was reset). It has its original finish throughout with no touchup or overspray (see notes on headstock facing below), and the internal bracing is all original including the bridge plate.  The only difference between this guitar and an OM-28 from 1933 is the model code stamped on the neck block. \r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eThe only repair we can detect is the proper neck reset, and although we don't know when it was done it was certainly a clean, hard-to-detect job. If not for finding the old frets in the case we probably would have assumed all frets were original. We try not to rave about how guitars sound compared to other examples of the same style and vintage, but this 000-28 has all the volume and clarity you could hope to find in 14-fret rosewood 000. The neck has the \"rounded V\" profile, and is a full 1 3\/4\" wide at the nut.   Another plus, of course, is what appears to be the original case, and the July 1989 letter from Mike Longworth at Martin.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eAbout the headstock: There is no C. F. Martin decal, and the back of the headstock has the stamp.  Martin was already using the decal but since this was a special order, maybe Tom didn't want one?
