The frets show almost no wear. It was part of a batch of guitar we special ordered using maple that had been stored in our attic for almost 50 years. Here’s what we had to say about when we first got it:\r
\r
With a torrefied Sitka Spruce soundboard, 1 3 ⁄ 4 '' nut width and stage-ready ES-2 pickup, this guitar was designed to deliver a powerful, clear and even tone that compliments fingerstyle players and sensitive flat pickers alike. Aesthetically, we wanted the gorgeous figuring on the maple to be the focal point of the instrument and chose a chocolaty dark edge-burst finish that pairs well with the natural beauty of the wood. The elegant koa binding is both stunning and functional, we’ve always been fans of hardwood binding), and serves as a pleasing transition from the maple back to the spruce top. This Grand Auditorium achieves the distinct High-Fidelity tone that Taylor is known for, but it's coded with a little bit of Gryphon’s DNA. Easy to pick up, hard to put down,we know you’ll enjoy this special instrument!\r
\r
The story of Gryphon’s Aged Maple\r
\r
This Custom Taylor is part of a small batch made with highly figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks. This was before a retail store was opened, and once that happened repairs and restoration quickly put most building projects on the back burner, where they stayed as demand for repairs changed Gryphon's direction. This maple has been stored in Gryphon's attic ever since, but Andy Powers and the crew at Taylor has helped us finally put it to good use.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0503/4947/3991/files/1117331_f46b33b9-b499-4432-885b-9c33c6d7d09c.jpg?v=1789118140
taylor-custom-aged-maple-grand-symphony-acoustic-electric-guitar-new-20297
Taylor Custom Aged Maple Grand Symphony Acoustic Electric Guitar - New
This Custom Taylor was designed by our own Michael John Simmons. Here's what he has to say about it: Taylor’s 50th Anniversary had me feeling nostalgic so I ordered this Grand Symphony with X-Bracing rather than the new V-Class Bracing. I wanted to see what Taylor’s classic bracing would sound like with their latest building techniques, and all I can say I am very impressed. I’ve always loved the sound of large maple guitars, which have a richness and clarity that work well for so many different styles of music. This Custom has a scale length of 24 ⅞”, which a little shorter than usual on a large guitar like this, and the lighter tension makes playing this guitar a little easier on your fretting hand. I wanted a different look so I opted for a red sunburst. - Michael \r
\r
About Gryphon’s Aged Maple: \r
\r
The back and sides were milled from big slabs of figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks. Here's what he has to say about it: My primary objective with designing this guitar was to create a guitar that combines the immediate snap of a full 25 ½” scale with the comfortable contours of a concert body. Maple is a wonderfully clear tonewood with a crystal-clear sound that has an honest quality to it. With that in mind, I wanted to create a guitar that would serve as a perfect vessel for both solo fingerpicking and songwriting and boy did Taylor certainly delivered on that vision. One strum of the guitar reveals a lively tone with a clear top end and a surprisingly powerful balanced bass that punches way above its weight class. For a relatively small body it has a surprising amount of projection.\r
\r
In terms of the aesthetics, it was important that the finer appointments helped to highlight the most striking feature of the instrument – the wood. I opted for a shimmery amber burst for the back and sides because I felt the golden hue would showcase the spectacular flame figuring on the maple. The top features a subtle aging toner and a single ring abalone rosette for a natural and stately look. The binding on the body and fingerboard is highly figured koa, which not only protects the extremities of the guitar from misadventure but also looks gorgeous to boot.\r
\r
Ultimately this instrument is a great example of the fact that you don’t always have to sacrifice tone for playability. The genius of Taylor’s compact Grand Concert body affords the player perfect ease of play while the added dimensions of the longer scale length provide a familiar feel to players more accustomed to larger body guitars. All in all, the guitar is simply a blast to play. Well done Taylor. - Jason\r
\r
About Gryphon’s Aged Maple: \r
\r
The back and sides were milled from big slabs of figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks.
