Details
We try not to get too carried away with superlatives, but this Gibson ES-335 deserves the “most original ‘60s ES-335 we’ve had” claim for a couple of reasons. First of all, it was purchased new in 1968 by the previous owner and was apparently rarely played, and certainly never altered. When it wasn’t being played very carefully it was stashed in its original hardshell case, and as a result the chrome plating on the pickup covers, bridge, and tailpiece looks brand new. But the most important “best” about this Gibson is that the classic cherry red stain has seen so little exposure to UV that it’s still dark, rich and vibrant. This classic Gibson color, achieved with aniline dyes, is notoriously “fugitive” when exposed to sunlight and most cherry-red Gibsons from this era are closer to an orange or reddish brown if they’ve spent much time in the real world. This example has slight hints of fret wear in the lower positions, and there are some light scuffs from fingers or picks to black pickguard, so it did see some use. We won’t list all the parts that are original, because all of its parts are what were on it when Gibson shipped it and the only thing that’s been changed is the strings.
